Zimmer Midwest Communications and the staff at KWTO AM and FM, KTXR and KBFL are mourning the loss of former station owner Ken Meyer, who died early Monday morning at the age of 94 following a long illness.
Meyer formed Meyer Communications in 1964, along with his late wife, Jane.
He bought radio station KTXR in 1959, adding KWTO AM/FM in 1995 and KBFL in 2000.
Meyer previously owned radio stations in Kansas City, Fulton, and Lexington, Missouri, as well as stations in Amarillo, Texas and Montgomery, Alabama.
Meyer Communications signed on the first UHF television station in Springfield, KMTC (now KOZL).
They also owned KARD-TV in West Monroe, Louisiana.
The Meyer’s success in broadcasting allowed them to generously give back to their community.
Their gifts focused on higher education, the arts and various health organizations.
Jane Meyer died in 2002, but her influence in the company continued to be felt for another two decades.
The Meyer’s daughter, Connie Meyer, died in 1977.
In July 2020, Zimmer Midwest Communications purchased the stations from Meyer.
Services for Ken Meyer are under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield.
